LG Unveils Two High-End Android OS Smartphones

LG has taken the wraps off a pair of smartphones that will be variations on a theme. They are going to have different designs - one with a sliding keyboard and one without - but most other specs will be the same: Google's Android OS, 1 GHz processor, and a large AMOLED display.

The SU2300 was pre-announced in April, but many more details are now available. The SU950 is being unveiled for the first time.

Aside from their shapes, both smartphones have much in common, starting with a 3.5-inch WVGA (800x480) AMOLED Touchscreen and an optical trackpad. In addition, each will have a 5 megapixel camera, 3G, Wi-Fi and GPS.

The LG SU2300 will be a slider, with a landscape-oriented keyboard and large D-pad that can be hidden behind the display. The SU950, on the other hand, will forgo a physical keyboard in favor of an on-screen one.

Launching Soon
The models will debut in LG's home country, South Korea. The SU2300 will be released in May, while the SU950 will be out in June.

The SU2300 will launch running Android OS 1.6, but an upgrade to the latest version, 2.1, will be available in late summer. The SU950 will debut with version 2.1. In addition, LG is putting on a slightly modified version of Google's standard user interface.

A recent unconfirmed report gave the details of an upcoming model code-named the LG Aloha, which is supposedly headed for Europe. The leaked description matches the SU2300.

Coming to America?
At this point, it's unknown when or if, either smartphone will be introduced in the U.S.

Still, the LG VS740 recently appeared in Verizon Wireless' product database, along with a mention that it is a Google device. It's possible this will be a U.S. version of one of these newly-announced models.
