Palm's webOS-based smartphones come with a viewer for Microsoft Office files made by DataViz. An enhanced version with editing capabilities is in development, but DataViz says it has run into difficulties producing this app.
A statement from the company says:
We are continuing our efforts to work with Palm to clear the path for a full editing version of Documents To Go. However, given the current environment at Palm, as well as the necessary collaboration with the device manufacturer that is required to bring an app like ours to a platform like webOS, our Documents To Go editor product for webOS is essentially at a standstill.
DataViz doesn't go into details on why it isn't getting the cooperation it needs, but it's possible that Palm is being distracted by its recent difficulties making sales goals.
This leaves Palm Pre and Pixi users at an impasse, as DataViz is the only company producing software to allow these smartphones to edit Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files.
