The just-announced Google Editions will be the search giant's foray into selling electronic books.
This is going to put it head-to-head against Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble, who have been aggressively moving into the e-book market. Both companies offer dedicated e-readers - the Kindle and the nook, respectively - as well as software to let some mobile devices read books purchased through their stores.
Google is going pursue a different strategy. Under its system, customers will buy and read books in a web browser, giving users access to them on a wide array of devices.
The company will allow other book sellers to tie in to Google Editions and pocket a share of the profits from each sale.
Google's e-book store will debut this summer.
