Samsung Moment's Android 2.1 Upgrade Getting Closer

The Android OS 2.1 upgrade for the Samsung Moment that Sprint has promised is apparently getting close to release. Close enough that a version of it can already be downloaded from Sprint's website.

The carrier had hoped to have this update out already, but it and Samsung ran into problems that pushed the release back. Still, the new version of the system software for this smartphone is scheduled for release before the end of June.

Those who don't want to wait can download an install a version of Android OS 2.1 for the Moment that has been found on Sprint's website. However, this has not been officially released by the carrier, and might be a beta version that could cause problems for the device.

New in Android OS 2.1
The latest version of Google's mobile OS sports many new features, including much greater support for speech-to-text, allowing users to enter text into an application with only their voice.

In addition, "pinch-to-zoom" multi-touch has been added to the web browser, photo viewer and maps applications, and OS 2.1 offers enhanced weather and news widgets.

The smartphone is a slider featuring a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, and a 3.2-inch HVGA AMOLED touchscreen

It is available exclusively from Sprint, and supports the carrier's EV-DO Rev. A wireless broadband network. It also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

In addition, the Samsung Moment includes a microSD slot (a 2 GB microSD card is included), GPS, a 3.2 megapixel camera,  a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack, and an accelerometer.
