Dell Mini 5 Android-based Tablet Phone Definitely Coming to AT&T

Dell CEO Michael Dell has made it official: AT&T is going to introduce the Dell Mini 5 this summer. The smartphone, also known by its code-name "Streak," is going to run Google's Android OS on a 1 GHz processor, and sport a 5-inch touchscreen.

There have been unconfirmed reports before that the tablet phone is coming to AT&T, but Dell made it official yesterday during a speech to an audience attending the Citrix Synergy conference.

The Mini 5 is going to be available first from the European carrier O2, which will launch it next month.

Dell did not say exactly when AT&T is going to release the model, or what its price. He did mention that the tablet phone will come with Citrix software to allow it to control a remote PC.

Dell is positioning the Mini 5 as a large smartphone rather than a small tablet, since it will have a 5-inch screen and the ability to make phone calls.

Its capacitive touchscreen will have a WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) resolution and support for multi-touch.

The Mini 5 is going to run Google's Android OS on a 1 GHz processor. The prototype units that have been shown for the last few months run the older OS 1.6, but according to reports, it will debut with something more recent, possibly version 2.1.

Dell's mini-tablet will sport 3G wireless access, and will also include Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

The Mini 5 is going to include a 5-megapixel camera on its back, and a front-facing one for video conferencing. In addition, it will include a 3.5-mm headphone jack.

The tablet and its successors are going to be bundled with a suite of entertainment, communications and productivity software, as well as an Adobe Flash player.
