HTC Mondrian Might Run Windows Phone 7 on a 1.3 GHz Processor

Microsoft took the wraps off the Windows Phone 7 this spring, and several companies are developing models to run it, including HTC. The company has yet to unveil its first model based on Microsoft's next-generation mobile operating system, but many details have leaked out.

Windows Phone 7 was created for high-end devices, and the HTC Mondrian will sport a 1.3 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor.

It will also reportedly include a 4.3-inch, WVGA, capacitive Touchscreen set in a tablet-shaped device.

The Mondrian will support both GSM/HSPA and CDMA/EV-DO in a single unit, freeing HTC from the need to make a model specifically for carriers like Verizon and Sprint.

It could be sold under the name HTC HD3.

Meeting the Requirements
Not all the details on this upcoming model have leaked out yet. But if it is going to run Windows Phone 7, it will have to conform to some fairly stringent hardware requirements.

At launch, all devices running this new operating system will have to have a WVGA (800 x 480) capacitive touchscreen. In addition, all models have to include Wi-Fi, a 5 megapixel camera with flash, a GPS receiver, and at least 8 GB of storage and 256 MB of RAM.

Microsoft is even specifying the number and arrangements of buttons below the screen, one of which has to be dedicated to the Bing search engine.

The feature list also must include an accelerometer, compass, proximity sensor, and an FM radio.

Despite its name, Microsoft's next smartphone operating system has little in common with its predecessors. It will have a completely different user interface and won't run applications written for the earlier versions nor will any current models be upgradeable.

Its focus has moved to consumers, and its UI emphasizes social networking, pictures, games, etc. It has also been redesigned to be controlled with a fingertip.

Just about the only significant similarity between the old and new phone is that they both include Microsoft Office Mobile and support for synchronizing with Microsoft Exchange.

According to Microsoft, the first models running Windows Phone 7 will be on the market into for the holiday shopping season.
