Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite is an office suite for Apple iPhone and iPod touch. It allows users to access, edit, view, and share documents including Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel files, as well as PDFs.
Quickoffice for iPhone has three components:
PowerPoint editing/creation is a planned addition later this year. A full list of supported file types can be found here.
Another major feature of Quickoffice is its ability to connect with cloud services including MobileMe, Dropbox, Google Docs, and Box.net.
In Use
The Quickoffice for iPhone main screen shows a list of available file locations including the device itself and connected cloud service accounts such as Google Docs. Touching a location brings up a list of files stored there.
The icons at the bottom of this screen (left to right) are: create a new document, create a new folder, send files via email, and move and delete files. Multiple files can be selected at once -- this is very slick.
Uploading Files
Type the IP address shown at the bottom of Quickoffice's home screen into a web browser to upload files directly onto the device.
Multiple files can be uploaded simultaneously.
Working with Files
Simply touch the name of a file on the list to open it. Left to right below are Word, Excel, and .PDF documents:
Files take just a few seconds to open and can be viewed in portrait or landscape modes. Quickoffice wordwraps Word/text files which means no horizontal scrolling, a very nice feature
Editing files has a short learning curve due to the icon-driven interface, but is as easy as you can expect on a mobile device with a small screen.
There are basic text formatting controls, alignment, and search options for Word/text files:
Text can be highlighted by double-tapping and dragging. Copy, cut, and paste is supported.
Quicksheet offers direct cell editing in Excel files and a limited number of functions are supported. Worksheets can be added, deleted, or renamed.
Saving Files
Quickoffice autosaves files and will auto-restore them if exited prematurely.
Conclusion
Quickoffice Connect Mobile Suite for iPhone is a polished mobile productivity suite. Accessing and viewing files is easy and cloud service support is seamless. Performance is good and it has an intuitive interface.
Quickoffice is best used as a file viewer; editing is tedious but that is unavoidable on a mobile device.
We find Quickoffice worth the $14.99 asking price -- it certainly beats whipping out a laptop for quick file access.
