Motorola Droid Will Soon Get Android OS 2.2

A company spokesperson has promised that an Android OS 2.2 upgrade will be released for the Motorola Droid before too much longer.

Android OS 2.2, the latest version of Google's operating system, was unveiled late last week and just began reaching customers hands over the weekend. 

The Motorola spokesperson said, "We do expect DROID by Motorola users will receive Android 2.2 as a software upgrade in the near future." The person declined to be more specific about the timing.

This smartphone was the first with Andoid OS 2.0, and was upgraded to version 2.1 this spring.

New in Android OS 2.2
The latest version of Google's mobile operating system is the first to include tethering and portable hotspot software. However, it's possible this feature will be stripped out or modified in some devices, as not all wireless carriers allow their subscribers to use their smartphone as a modem for another computer, and some carriers charge an extra monthly fee for this service.

Android OS 2.2 is required for devices to run Adobe Flash Player 10.1, which allows the web browser to fully make use of websites that use Flash for navigation, games, and showing video.

This new version also contains a number of other small enhancements, but none of the improvements significantly change the platform.

An Overview of the Motorola Droid
The Motorola Droid is this company's flagship model, and sports a large, high-resolution capacitive Touchscreen and a landscape-oriented QWERTY keyboard. Nevertheless, it still has a slim design.

This smartphone currently runs Google Android OS 2.1, and has a suite of applications that can wirelessly synchronize with Google's services, including Gmail, Calendar, Contacts, and Maps, as well as Microsoft Exchange. An extensive catalog of third-party apps is also available.

The Droid comes with a 16 GB memory card, GPS receiver, and a 5 MPx camera.

Verizon Wireless is the exclusive U.S. provider of the Motorola Droid.
