Apple iPhone 3GS Dropping to Just $97 at Wal-Mart

Retail giant Wal-Mart is cutting in half the price it charges for the iPhone 3GS. The move comes as Apple is getting ready to replace this model with a new one.

The 16 GB version of the iPhone 3GS normally sells for $200 with a two-year AT&T service contract, but Wal-Mart is dropping that price to $97 today. That's lower than the $99 AT&T charges for the 8 GB iPhone 3G.

Clearing Out Inventory
According to information that has leaked out of Apple, this company will soon replace its current smartphone with a new version that will offer a number of enhancements.

The fourth-generation iPhone is supposedly going to offer a 640 x 960 Touchscreen and a 1 GHz processor. It will also have a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera and a smaller front-facing one for video conferencing.

Dropping the price of a product just before an updated version is released is a normal technique used by retailers to clear out inventory of a device that's about to become obsolete.

This is especially important in this case, as well-publicized leaks have made much of the world well-aware that that Apple's current iPhone is about to be out of date.

The iPhone 3GS debuted in June of last year. It offers an HVGA capacitive touchscreen in a slim tablet shape.

It supports 3G cellular-wireless networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

This smartphone offers 16 GB or 32 GB of internal storage, a 3.0 megapixel camera, and a 600 MHz processor.

All iPhones have the ability to run native third-party applications that have been approved by Apple. In addition, they are able to connect to Microsoft Exchange for corporate email service.

In the U.S., this smartphone is available exclusively from AT&T.
