Skype 2.0 for iPhone Will Charge for Calls over 3G Networks

The new version of Skype for iPhone adds support for making voice calls over a 3G cellular-wireless connection, in addition to Wi-Fi.

The advantage of VoIP software is making calls doesn't require voice minutes. However, Skype eventually intends to charge for making calls over a 3G connection, but this new feature is going to be free until next year.

The exact price for this service has not yet been announced, but a statement from the company says:

"Offering certain product features on a paid-for basis allows Skype to continue to invest in developing the innovative products that its users are constantly asking for. Skype knows its users expect great value from its paid products and believes the 3G calling capability delivers that. However, Skype is also committed to ensuring that the pricing for 3G calling on the iPhone will be in line with customers’ expectations."

This free application allows users to talk for free to other Skype clients, on desktops or phones. It also allows users to call land-lines around the world at low rates.

It can be used with the iPod touch too, but requires an external microphone.

This app supports Skype's instant message service, so users can text chat with one or many people at the same time.
