Android OS-based HTC Liberty May Be Headed for AT&T

The HTC Liberty is supposedly going to be offered by AT&T. An image and some details of the smartphone have leaked out, indicating that it will run Google's Android OS and have an HVGA touchscreen.

AT&T has committed to offering at least one HTC model running the Android OS in the near future, but hasn't revealed any details on exactly what is going to be released.

According to information that has leaked out of HTC, the Liberty is on the carrier's docket. This smartphone will have a tablet shape with a 320 x 480 Touchscreen and an optical trackball but no physical keyboard.

An earlier unconfirmed report indicated that this model will have a relatively small display: close to 2.8-inches.

It will supposedly run Android OS 2.1 with the HTC Sense user interface layered on top.

The smartphone will reportedly have a 5 megapixel camera, and a 3.5 mm headset jack but all other specifications are unknown at this point.

AT&T and Android
In January, AT&T promised to release five smartphones running Google's Android OS in the first half of this year. So far it has released only one, the Motorola Backflip, and announced plans to offer a second, the Dell Aero. The carrier says at least one of the remaining models will be made by HTC.

In April, the FCC approved an HTC model with support for AT&T's wireless network. Few details are known about this smartphone aside from its shape -- a slider with a landscape-oriented keyboard (see an image) -- and product number -- PC70110. This device might be the Android OS-based HTC Aria that has been the subject of several unconfirmed reports.

The identity of AT&T's fifth upcoming Android OS smartphone remains unknown.
