iPhone for Verizon and/or Sprint To Start Shipping in Q4

A manufacturing company in Taiwan is going to start shipping to Apple a version of the iPhone for CDMA-based wireless networks in the fourth quarter of this year, according to an unconfirmed report. This version of Apple's smartphone could be headed for Verizon, Sprint, or both.

Apple outsources much of its device production to Asia, and sources say Pegatron Technology -- a spin off of Asustek -- has been tapped to manufacture an iPhone for CDMA networks. This will be produced in Shanghai.

iPhones for Everyone
Back in 2007, AT&T and Apple forged an agreement that made AT&T the sole U.S. provider for the iPhone, but persistent but unconfirmed rumors have indicated that this is coming to an end later this year.

Verizon is the carrier these reports indicate is most likely to get a version of the device, but all the U.S. carriers have made it clear they'd be happy to offer Apple's very popular smartphone.

There are a few technical hurdles, most notably the fact that the current iPhone supports only GSM networks and Verizon and Sprint would need a new version for their CDMA networks, but Pegatron is supposedly taking care of this.

Overview of the Apple iPhone 4
Apple's fourth-generation smartphone is going to be a significant upgrade from the current one, starting with its 3.5-inch, 640 x 960 touchscreen, a much higher resolution than any previous iPhone has offered.

It's going to have a new slimmer design and run iOS 4.0, the latest version of Apple's operating system, on a 1 GHz Apple A4 processor. This will be the first version of Apple's mobile OS with support for multitasking.

The iPhone 4 will have a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera with a flash, as well as support for recording 720p video at 30 frames per second. In addition, it's going to include a small front-facing camera for video chatting with an app called FaceTime.

Not everything is being improved: Apple's upcoming smartphone will have the same amount of storage capacity as the current one.

This smartphone will have 3G wireless networking, as well as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a GPS receiver.
