Palm Promises New webOS Devices Are on the Way

In a conference call with developers yesterday, Palm promised that it has new models based on the webOS in the pipeline, though it declined to be more specific.

The company introduced the Palm Pre just over a year ago, and many are hoping a new flagship smartphone will be released soon.

A Company in Transition
After struggling for several years with poor sales due to an out of date operating system, Palm made a big splash last year with the release of the webOS-based Palm Pre.

Unfortunately for the company, sales didn't live up to expectations, and Palm agreed to be acquired by HP this spring, a process that is still going on. This leaves it in limbo, no longer an independent company but not yet a part of HP either.

There have also been questions about what HP's plans for the webOS are, especially in the wake of some confusing comments from CEO Mark Hurd about his company not going into the smartphone business. The company has tried to clear up the confusion by saying that it intends to use the webOS on smartphones, tablets, and even printers.

New Models?
Exactly when any of these new products will be released is not yet known.

In its conference call yesterday, a member of Palm's developer relations team responded to a question about upcoming webOS-based device by saying:

I'm not allowed to talk about future roadmaps, especially because we're in the process of being acquired by HP, so I can't say. But yes we have a road map. We are working on future devices. And [a] new version of the OS. So I think, you're going to find the next year very exciting.
