Motorola Droid X May Already Be Sold Out

Best Buy began taking pre-orders for Verizon's Motorola Droid X late last week, and this retailers are reportedly already stopped because it has sold all the units it expects to have available at launch.

This cutting edge model isn't going to hit store shelves until July 15, but Verizon gave Best Buy the exclusive rights to take pre-orders.

Calls to several Best Buy locations today have all had the same result: the retailer has stopped taking Droid X pre-orders because it has gone though all the units that will be available when this smartphone is released.

An All Too Typical Situation
In the last few months, smartphone makers have had difficulties meeting demand for most cutting-edge devices due to component shortages, especially for the large, high-resolution screens used by these models.

Sprint has sold out of its stock of the HTC EVO 4G several times, while Verizon's HTC Droid Incredible is backordered until late July. Apple has had similar problems keeping up with demand for the iPhone 4.

Verizon's next high-end smartphone is going to have a tablet shape, with a 4.3-inch WVGA (480 x 800) touchscreen.

The Droid X will run Google Android OS 2.1 on a 1 GHz processor, and an upgrade to Android OS 2.2 is is scheduled to be available later this summer.

It is going to be well supplied with other cutting-edge features, like an 8 megapixel camera, 8 GB of internal storage, a microSD memory card slot, a GPS receiver, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and support for Verizon's 3G mobile broadband network.

The Motorola Droid X has been priced at $200 by Verizon, after a $100 rebate and with a two-year contract.
