Three of T-Mobile's smartphones will be getting upgrades to Android OS 2.1 next month, according to a product roadmap leaking out of this carrier.
While this is good news for users of the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, Motorola Cliq, and Cliq XT, some of these people have been waiting for operating system upgrades since last year.
All three models currently run Android OS 1.5, but the long-awaited Android OS 2.1 upgrade will supposedly be released in August.
An earlier unconfirmed report indicated that myTouch 3G and its sister model the newer myTouch 3G Slide will get upgrades to Android OS 2.2 at some point.
New in Android OS 2.1
The latest version of Google's mobile OS sports many new features, including much greater support for speech-to-text, allowing users to enter text into an application with only their voice.
In addition, "pinch-to-zoom" multi-touch has been added to the web browser, photo viewer and maps applications, and OS 2.1 offers enhanced weather and news widgets.
More about the T-Mobile myTouch 3G, Motorola Cliq, and Cliq XT
The T-Mobile myTouch 3G was this carrier's second smartphone with Google's operating system. It has tablet shape with a 3.2-inch HVGA touchscreen, and was actually created by HTC.
The Motorola Cliq debuted from T-Mobile last October, and this was followed by the March debut of the Cliq XT. Both have a 3.1-inch HVGA (320 x 240 pixel) touchscreen, but the original has a sliding keyboard, while the latest uses a tablet shape sans keyboard.
Both run Android OS 1.5 with MotoBlur, Motorola's software that brings together messages from a range of social-networking services, text messages and email into a universal inbox. MotoBlur has fans, but there's been criticism for the delay in releasing system software upgrades for devices that use it.
