Motorola Droid X Arrives Early for a Lucky Few

Some people who pre-ordered a Motorola Droid X got a surprise late last week when they received this hotly-anticipated smartphone several days before the scheduled launch.

Reports of a few Verizon customers getting the Droid X started appearing on the Web a few days ago, and information leaking out of this carrier indicates that 170 units were sent out early.

Verizon has allowed this group to go ahead and enjoy their new device by visiting the MyVerizon website or dialing *228 on the device.

The scheduled launch day for the Droid X is Thursday, July 15.

Verizon's next high-end smartphone is going to have a tablet shape, with a 4.3-inch WVGA (480 x 800) touchscreen.

The Droid X will run Google Android OS 2.1 on a 1 GHz processor, and an upgrade to Android OS 2.2 is is scheduled to be available later this summer.

It is going to be well supplied with other cutting-edge features, like an 8 megapixel camera, 8 GB of internal storage, a microSD memory card slot, a GPS receiver, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and support for Verizon's 3G mobile broadband network.

The Motorola Droid X has been priced at $200 by Verizon, after a $100 rebate and with a two-year contract.
