Android-based Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Getting Close to an AT&T Release

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 could be released by AT&T in the next few weeks. There have been unconfirmed reports that this high-end smartphone is headed for AT&T for months, and the launch is supposedly drawing near.

The Xperia X10 runs Google's Android OS, and offers a large, high-resolution display, a 1 GHz processor and a 8.1 megapixel camera, among other high-end features.

It is already available in Europe, but AT&T will apparently be the first U.S. carrier to offer it.

This model has just passed AT&T's internal certification process, according to an unconfirmed report, clearing a major hurdle for its launch.

The exact release date has not leaked out yet, nor has the price.

The Xperia X10 is full of high-end features, starting with its 4 inch, WVGA+ (480 x 854 pixel) capacitive touchscreen.

It runs Google's Android OS on a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. The version available now has Android OS 1.6, but Sony Ericsson has promised to release a version of OS 2.1 for the device this quarter. It's possible AT&T's version will debut with the newer version.

Another high-end feature on the X10 is the 8.1-megapixel auto-focus camera with flash and video support. It offers face and smile detection, as well as image stabilization.

To set it apart from the competition, Sony Ericsson has built some special apps for its new Xperia models, including one that can bring together messages from a variety of sources, including Facebook, Twitter, photos, emails and texts.

The wireless capabilities of the X10 include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, and a GPS receiver.

A microSDHC memory card slot, a 1500 mAh battery, and a 3.5 mm headset jack are also included.

Business users might be happy to hear that this Sony Ericsson model has Exchange ActiveSync, in addition to support for consumer email systems. It also has an Office suite.
