Samsung is apparently prepping a second model running Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 7. Leaked images show this will be much more angular than an earlier model from this company that will have the same OS.
Microsoft unveiled its next mobile operating system in the spring, and the first devices based on it are scheduled for release near the end of this year.
Pictures of a number of these smartphones have leaked out, and a Samsung model is the latest to appear.
This is the second time images of a Windows Phone 7-based device have been posted on the Web, but the latest (shown at left) has a very different look than its predecessor (shown below).
The latest model has a much more rectangular shape, and little to no chrome, while the earlier model has curvier lines and quite a bit of chrome.
Meeting the Requirements
At this point, none of the exact specifications for this Samsung device have leaked out. However, it's nevertheless possible to give a fairly complete description of them. That's because Microsoft is requiring all devices running Windows Phone 7 to meet some fairly stringent hardware requirements.
At launch, all devices running this new operating system will have to have a WVGA (800 x 480) capacitive touchscreen. Support for other screen resolutions will be added later.
In addition, all models have to include Wi-Fi, a 5 megapixel camera with flash, a GPS receiver, and at least 8 GB of storage and 256 MB of RAM.
Microsoft is even specifying the number and arrangements of buttons below the screen, one of which has to be dedicated to the Bing search engine. These can clearly been seen in the leaked image of each Samsung device.
The feature list also must include an accelerometer, compass, proximity sensor, and an FM radio.
