Android-based Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Now Available from AT&T

Today is the launch of the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 from AT&T. This Android OS smartphone has a surprisingly low price given its many high-end features: a large touchscreen, 1 GHz processor, a 8.1 megapixel camera, and more.

It is debuting at $150 with a two-year contract, when similar models go for $200.

The lower price could be releated to its out of date operating system version: the Xperia X10 runs Android OS 1.6 at a time when OS 2.2 is becoming increasingly common. Still, Sony Ericsson has promised to release OS 2.1 for it some time this quarter.

AT&T's latest has a tablet shape with a 4-inch, WVGA+ (480 x 854 pixel) capacitive touchscreen.

To set it apart from the competition, Sony Ericsson has built some special apps for its new Xperia models, including one that can bring together messages from a variety of sources, including Facebook, Twitter, photos, emails and texts.

The wireless capabilities of the X10 include 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1, and a GPS receiver.

Its 8.1-megapixel auto-focus camera has a flash and video support. It offers face and smile detection, as well as image stabilization.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 is already available in Europe, but AT&T will be the first U.S. carrier to offer it.
