LG Promises 10 New Smartphones By Year's End

LG has committed to releasing 10 new smartphones before the end of 2010. These will be a mix of devices running either Google Android OS or Microsoft Windows Phone 7.

LG has a big share of the world phone market, but it's a small player when it comes to smartphones -- just over 1%.

The company hopes to change that, and to do this plans to spend more in research and development as well as marketing its products.

A Dual OS Strategy
LG isn't putting all its eggs in one basket. It plans to offer smartphones running Google's operating system as well as Microsoft's.

It already has the Android OS-based LG Ally on the market as well as the LG Fathom, with runs Windows Mobile 6.5 Pro.

Looking ahead, the company is going to release the Optimus One next month. This will be an entry-level smartphone running the Android OS.

LG is also going to introduce devices running Microsoft's next mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7. One of the first of these will be the LG Panther (shown at right) 

Betting on NVIDIA
LG also announced today that it's going to use a dual-core processor from NVIDIA in at least some of its future smartphones.

The Tegra is a competitor to the Qualcomm Snapdragon and the Samsung Hummingbird processors.
