Motorola Droid 2 World Edition To Sport a 1.2 GHz Processor

Verizon is reportedly set to introduce a version of the Motorola Droid 2 with support for making calls outside the U.S. A new report indicates that this model is going to be the first smartphone with a 1.2 GHz processor.

Until now, it was though that the main difference between the current Droid 2 and the upcoming World Edition would be support for both Verizon's CDMA/EV-DO network in the United States and the GSM/HSPA networks that are available in most other countries.

However, a prototype unit obtained by the website DroidLife runs Android OS 2.2 on a 1.2 GHz processor, while the original Droid 2 has a 1 GHz processor.

This Verizon smartphone is a slider with a 3.7-inch WVGA display and a landscape-oriented keyboard.

The Droid 2 can connect to Verizon's 3G (EV-DO Rev. A) network, and it includes Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. As discussed, the World Edition is expected to add support for GSM/HSPA when roaming internationally.

This Motorola model is able to share its 3G wireless Internet connection with other devices over Wi-Fi, essentially acting as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. This feature costs an additional $20 a month, though.

The Motorola Droid 2 has a 5 megapixel camera with a flash, 8 GB of on-board storage as well as an 8 GB microSD/SDHC memory card, and the new version is expected to offer the same.

Pricing and Availability
The Motorola Droid 2 launched last month, and is intended to replace the original Droid, but has been met with generally lukewarm reviews. An unconfirmed report indicates that the Droid Pro is going to take the Droid 2's place in Verizon's product lineup.

When this is going to happen is not yet known, as the exact launch date for the Droid 2 World Edition has not yet been revealed, either officially or by unofficial channels. Still, it's expected sooner rather than later.

The Droid 2 sells for $200 with a two-year contract. If the Droid Pro replaces this model, it's likely to cost the same. If the two models are sold concurrently, the Droid Pro is likely to cost a bit more.
