New Versions of Gmail for Android OS No Longer Require System Software Updates

Google has released a new version of Gmail which Android OS users can download and install. Previously, users had to wait for new versions of the operating system to come out to get updates for core applications like this one.

This is part of Google's plan to make OS versions less important. In the past, many users eagerly looked forward to system software upgrades because they wanted new core applications, not a new version of the operating system.

However, the company has barely begun in this effort -- the new version of Gmail will only run on devices with Android OS 2, the latest version. The people who would most like new versions of core app are those with stuck with Android OS 1.6 and other older editions of the operating system.

New in Gmail for Android OS
Google has added a floating toolbar to the Gmail app, so users can always access the "Rely TO" button and other functions, no matter where they are in a message.

In addition, when reading a message that the latest in a series, earlier ones are hidden unless the user taps on “Show quoted text”. This is how the desktop version of Gmail functions.

Google has also given the Android OS version of this software limited support for its new Priority Inbox feature. On smartphones this will automatically mark message the system think is important with a star.
