Verizon Prepping Four Android OS Worldphones

A listing of current and upcoming worldphones has leaked out of Verizon, showing that this carrier will soon be introducing four new models with Google's Android OS that can make calls when roaming outside of the United States.

Verizon's cellular network uses the CDMA standard, while most countries only have networks using a rival standard: GSM. This means that a majority of Verizon's phones can't make calls outside of the U.S.

However, the carrier offers a number of worldphones, which support both CDMA and GSM. This includes devices like the BlackBerry Storm2 and HTC Imagio, but no Android OS smartphones. That's apparently going to change soon.

Droids and More
One smartphone on this list has already been announced: the Motorola Droid Pro. This has clearly been designed to lure in those who are used to a BlackBerry, but want the power and flexibility of the Android OS.

The second model on the leaked list is the Motorola Droid 2 Global. According to the unconfirmed reports have been circulating for some time, this will be a version of the current Droid 2 with a faster processor and, of course, worldphone capabilities.

The third Verizon device on this list has also been the subject of a number of unconfirmed reports: the HTC Merge. This will supposedly be a slider with a large Touchscreen and keyboard.

The fourth of this carrier's upcoming worldphones is an almost complete mystery. At this point, no specifications of the LG enV Pro have leaked out.

Coming this Quarter
Verizon has announced that the Droid Pro will hit store shelves during the first week of November.  And an unconfirmed report says the HTC Merge will be released on November 11.

No dates for the other two models are known, but information that has leaked out of Verizon indicates that all four of these models will be on the market before the end of this quarter. And considering the importance of the holiday shopping season, they will likely be out well before the end of the year.
