Google has announced that there are now over 100,000 applications available in the Android Market.
Though an impressive number, Google's operating system is still behind the Apple iOS, which recently passed the 300,000 mark.
Still, it puts the Android OS ahead of its rivals like the Blackberry OS, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7, and HP's webOS.
Apps for this platform run the gamut from very practical Microsoft Office suites to extremely silly games, and virtually everything in between.
It's the Apps, Dummy
In the last few years, smartphone users have woken up to the advantages of third-party software. Much of the credit for this can be given to Apple's "There's an App for That" TV advertising campaign, which demonstrated some of the possibilities.
Many consumers now cite the availability of add-on software as a requirement when buying a new phone. And generally speaking, "more is better", which is why Apple and Google have been bragging about the number of apps available for their respective platforms.
