BlackBerry Bold 9780 Officially Unveiled, Headed for T-Mobile Next Month

T-Mobile USA has just announced plans to launch the BlackBerry Bold 9780 in the middle of next month.

This will be a high-end smartphone that's a moderately updated version of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 already in this carrier's lineup. It will have the same general design, but some of the specifications will be improved.

Most notably, it is going to debut running BlackBerry OS 6.0, the latest version of RIM's operating system. This has been enhanced with a redesigned home screen and a more advanced web browser, among other changes.

Owners of the Bold 9700 won't have to buy a new smartphone to get this new OS version -- RIM has promised to release a system software upgrade for this current model.

The Bold 9780 will include a 5 megapixel auto-focus camera with LED flash, quite a jump up from the 3.2 MPx one in the earlier device.

Familiar Specs
For the most part, the Bold 9780 is going to be identical to its predecessor.

This includes using the same design, with a 2.44-inch, 480 x 360 display above a small keyboard.

This Blackberry will have a 624 MHz processor, 528 MB of RAM, and a microSD/SDHC memory card slot.

It will also have the same wireless capabilities as the current model: support for T-Mobile's 3G network, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

In addition, this smartphone is going to include Wi-Fi calling (UMA where available).

Pricing and Availability
T-Mobile is going to launch the BlackBerry Bold 9780 on November 17 in black or white. It is going to sell for $130 after a $50 mail-in rebate with a two-year service agreement and qualifying data plan.

AT&T also offers the Bold 9700, and earlier published reports indicate that this carrier is going to offer its replacement at some point soon.
