Sprint's Android OS-based LG Optimus S to Debut on Sunday

Sprint is getting ready to introduce the LG Optimus S, an inexpensive Android OS-based device created for those buying their first smartphone.

"LG partnered with Sprint to deliver a handset that would empower first-time smartphone users to discover the changing mobile phone marketplace," said Ehtisham Rabbani, LG's corporate vice president, marketing and innovation.  

As an entry-level model, it will include a 3.2-inch, capacitive, HVGA Touchscreen -- smaller and lower resolution than more costly devices.

The Optimus S will run Android OS 2.2 on a 600 MHz processor, so it will have the latest version of Google's operating system, but a slower chip than high-end devices use.

In the wireless department, it will sport 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS, plus is will be able to act as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot for other computers.

In addition, this LG model will have a 3.2 megapixel auto-focus camera, microSD memory card slot, and a 1500 mAh battery.

As it will run Google's mobile operating system, this device will include a collection of entertainment and communication apps, including a very capable web browser, navigation software, and much more.

It is going to offer Sprint ID, this carrier's system for bundling together apps, widgets, wallpapers, and ringtones into collections with a theme.

Pricing & Availability
Sprint says that the LG Optimus S is going to be available on Sunday, Nov. 7. That's a week after the carrier had first expected to release this product.

It will cost $50 with a two-year contract and $100 mail-in rebate.
