Google Android OS 2.3 Launch Could Be Right Around the Corner

The debut of the next version of Google's mobile operating system could happen next week. The company is expected to release Android OS 2.3 before the end of this year, and a new unconfirmed report says it be officially announced by the middle of this month.

Google is allegedly going to release the SDK (software development kit)  on Nov. 11. This is the tools developers need to create applications that fully support the new version of this operating system, code-named Gingerbread.

There have also been reports that the first model running Android OS 2.3 will be unveiled on Nov. 8.

What the Rumors Say
Official details on Gingerbread are still scanty, but the next version of this OS will supposedly include support for Google's video conferencing system. This will allegedly be tied into Google Talk. If this is true, smartphone users will be able make video calls to desktop and smartphone users.

In addition, Android OS 2.3 is also allegedly going to bring an improved look to Google's operating system. As part of this, the icons for the bundled applications are being redesigned so that they go together more smoothly.

Most of the other elements of the user interface are reportedly being tweaked, with stark white elements sometimes being replaced with a softer grey, and more green being used.
