Motorola Droid 2 Global with a 1.2 GHz Processor Now Available

Verizon Wireless has just begun offering a worldphone version of the Motorola Droid 2. Like its predecessor, this is an Android OS smartphone with a large touchscreen and keyboard, but it sports a faster processor.

The Droid 2 only hit the market in late summer, but it is already being succeeded by a new version with the ability to make calls when roaming outside of the United States.

The previous model hasn't been discontinued, but it did recently get a significant price cut.

Overview of the Motorola Droid 2 Global
The main difference between the current Droid 2 and the Global version is the addition of support for the GSM/HSPA networks that are available in many countries when the device is roaming. Naturally, it still supports Verizon's CDMA/EV-DO network in the United States.

In addition, the new model runs Android OS 2.2 on a 1.2 GHz processor, while the original Droid 2 has a 1 GHz processor. It is the first smartphone with a chip this fast.

Aside from these changes, though, the Droid 2 Global is very similar to its predecessor. This means this Motorola smartphone is a slider with a 3.7-inch WVGA touchscreen and a landscape-oriented keyboard.

It includes Wi-Fi b/g/n and Stereo Bluetooth, and is able to share its 3G wireless Internet connection with other devices over Wi-Fi, essentially acting as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot.

The Droid 2 Global comes with 16 GB of storage capacity: 8 GB of on-board storage and a microSD/SDHC memory card slot with an 8 GB card pre-installed.

It also has a 5 megapixel camera with a flash, GPS receiver, 1400 mAh battery, and 3.5 mm headset jack.

Pricing & Availability
The Motorola Droid 2 Global sells for $200 with a two-year service contract and $100 mail-in rebate. It costs $560 for those who don't want to sign a contract, or do not qualify for an upgrade subsidy.

This smartphone is available now on Verizon's website. It comes in two casing colors: black and white.
