HTC Droid Incredible Gets a System Software Update to Add VCAST App Store

Verizon has begun sending out an update for the system software on the HTC Droid Incredible. This fixes a number of bugs, and it also adds support for Verizon's VCAST app store.

There's a lot of money to be made in smartphone software sales, and this carrier doesn't want to be left out. That's why it has created its own on-device app store.

Even though VCAST Apps is just getting started, it already has a fairly substantial selection of programs to choose from. Customers can buy these and put the cost on their monthly service bill.

Other Enhancements
The latest system software update for the Droid Incredible also includes improvements to several of the bundled applications, as well as bug fixes.

According to Verizon's official changelog, version 3.26.605.1 of the system software offers:

• Updated Flash player includes security enhancements.
• Visual Voice Mail Wi-Fi improvements include removal of incorrect service messages and post-call notifications.
• Enhanced support for Yahoo!® IMAP email.
• Updated Slacker application.
• Attach files larger than 5 MB.
• Updated COX POP3 email settings.
• Play YouTube videos in YouTube application.
• Seamlessly switch between portrait and landscape views in Google Maps.
• Updated Comcast POP3 email settings.
• Search key and other buttons displayed in correct order.

Coming OTA
Verizon is sending the new system software out to the smartphone as an over-the-air (OTA) update. Users will be notified when it has arrived and asked to install it.

At this point, there isn't a way to manually download the update.

Overview of the HTC Droid Incredible
This smartphone has a tablet shape designed around a 3.7-inch WVGA (480 x 800) touchscreen.

The HTC Droid Incredible runs Google's Android OS 2.2 on a 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. HTC's Sense user interface is layered on top.

It also has 8 GB of internal storage, a microSD memory card slot, a GPS receiver, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and support for Verizon's 3G mobile broadband network.

The smartphone costs $200 after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement, and customers will need to subscribe to both a voice and data plan.

The HTC Droid Incredible is exclusively available from Verizon Wireless, but AT&T and T-Mobile customers can turn to the Google Nexus One, an almost identical device. Sprint users should check out the HTC EVO 4G.
