Motorola Olympus Could Be an Android OS Smartphone with a Tegra 2 Processor

Those who are looking ahead to the next cutting-edge smartphone should keep an eye out for the Motorola Olympus.

Many of the details of this upcoming Android OS-based device have leaked out, including some images.

According to unconfirmed reports, it is going to have a tablet shape with a 4.1-inch touchscreen, though the resolution for this display is not yet known.

Current prototypes of the Olympus are supposedly running Android OS 2.2 (Froyo), but OS 2.3 (Gingerbread) is expected to be released very soon, and this model might ship with the new version of Google's operating system.

The feature that has caught many people's eye is an an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core processor. The first-generation of the Tegra 2 chips run a 1 GHz, but NVIDIA says that their dual-core architecture gives them "faster Web browsing, snappier response time, and overall better performance" than 1 GHz single-core processors.

This Motorola model will supposedly be a video powerhouse, sporting an 8 megapixel camera with support for recording 1080p video, as well as an HDMI video-out port.

It will also reportedly include a front-facing camera for video conferencing.

Most of the other features of the Olympus remain a mystery, but it will include Wi-Fi a/b/g/n as well as Bluetooth 2.1.

Coming Next Year?
The Motorola Olympus is expected to start hitting store shelves in late January.

Unlike some smartphones from this carrier, it won't be exclusively available from a single carrier. Instead, a range of carriers will offer it.

There is a possibility that this will be one of Verizon's first models with the 4G wireless networking standard LTE.
