The FCC has posted on its website images and details of the BlackBerry 8980, an unannounced model from RIM. This may be a very low-cost model, as it won't have support for 3G networks.
Exactly what RIM's plans are for a device without support for 3G is not yet known, but it may be released in developing countries.
Getting approval from the FCC (Federal Communications Commission) is a necessary step before any wireless device can be used in the United States. After a product has been approved, this government agency posts the details on its website.
More Details
The 8980 is an updated version of the BlackBerry Curve 8900, which hit the market in early 2009.
Like its predecessor, it will have the usual BlackBerry shape: a tablet with a display above a small keyboard. The resolution of this screen is not yet known, but the 8900 had a 2.4-inch, 480 x 360 screen.
This upcoming smartphone will apparently ship with BlackBerry OS 5, not the newer OS 6 version.
The 8900 is going to offer quad-band GSM/GPRS and Wi-Fi b/g/n, but not HSPA.
Also on the short list of features is going to be a 3.2 megapixel camera with flash.
All other details on the Blackberry 8900 remain unknown, pending an official announcement from RIM.
