TI Unveils 1.5 GHz Dual-Core Smartphone Processor

Mobile devices will be seeing some of their first dual-core processors next year, as Texas Instruments announced the next OMAP 4 processor this morning.

The dual-core OMAP4440 is optimized for graphics and video performance, and offers speedier load times for webpages. With each core running at clock speeds up to 1.5 GHz, the processor will show marked performance advantages over its predecessors.

Cutting-Edge Video Capabilities
The new chip will feature a 50% increase in overall performance and a 33% decrease in webpage load times, according to Texas Instruments. HD video support and a 25% increase in graphics performance were also touted, thanks to graphics acceleration enhancements.

Given the upgrades in graphics performance and its support of high definition multimedia-including 3D TV playback capabilities-the OMAP4440's notable specs make it a powerful asset to mobile devices.

With mobile video teleconferencing on the horizon as a popular feature on future devices such as the rumored iPad 2, Texas Instruments has introduced the OMAP4440 as the ideal processor for the job; the OMAP4440 is capable of video conferencing in 1080p, features support for multiple video formats, and offers the ability to browse the web or share documents while conferencing.

The samples of the OMAP4440 will be available to the industry in the first quarter of 2011, while production is expected to begin in the second half of the year.
