HTC Commits to Android OS 2.3 Upgrades for ''Some'' Models

This week's official unveiling of Android OS 2.3 naturally raises the question of upgrades for current models. HTC, one of the most important makers of smartphones running Google's operating system, says that some of its devices will get upgrades.

Not surprisingly, HTC is also working on new models with OS 2.3, which is often referred to by its code-name "Gingerbread".

A statement from an HTC spokesperson says:

"We are excited about the OS update coming for Android, and while HTC will definitely have some phones running this OS, we do not have a specific timeframe for new phones or updates at this time."

Based on previous upgrade cycles, more recent and high-end models are the ones most likely to get updated to newer versions of the operating system.

HTC makes a number of popular smartphones running Google's OS, such as the HTC EVO 4G from Sprint and Verizon's HTC Droid Incredible.

A Special Case
One device made by HTC is at the top of the upgrade list; the Google Nexus One is actually an HTC product, and this model will continue its track record of being first with the latest operating system versions.

It was the first with Android OS 2.1 and OS 2.2, and Google says that an upgrade to OS 2.3 for this smartphone will be released before Christmas.

Google's main goals in the next version of its operating system for smartphones were improving the user interface, adding support for new types of communication, plus fostering games development.

Gingerbread is expected to be the fastest version yet. Plus, Google has tweaked the user interface a bit.

The process for cut-and-paste has been enhanced by a set of movable bounding arrows.

Support for multiple cameras has been built into Android OS 2.3 for video conferencing, and the new version also has support for VoIP/SIP software.

The enhancements made to improve gaming are intended to bring smoother animation and increased responsiveness.
