Many Dell Streak Users Won't Get Android OS 2.2 Until Next Month

Users of the version of the Dell Streak that is SIM-locked to AT&T are going to have to wait several more weeks to get an upgrade to Android OS 2.2. Other versions have already received this upgrade, however.

Previously, Dell had hoped to get an upgrade to the Froyo version of Google's operating system out to the carrier-locked version of this tablet phone this month. However, a statement from an official company spokesperson says: 

Customers in the United States who own AT&T SIM-locked versions of the phone will hopefully begin seeing the Froyo update sometime next month. In the meantime, we continue to work with AT&T to push this through.

This applies only to some Streak units:

Many customers who purchased the device in the United States before November 23 have units that are SIM-locked to AT&T. US customers who purchased the $299 version of the Streak (the one with a two-year AT&T contract) after November 23 also have units that are SIM-locked to AT&T.

Dell Streak units that aren't SIM locked should have already received their upgrade to Android OS 2.2.

New in Android OS 2.2 (Froyo)
With this release, Dell is dropping the proprietary user interface that was on the Streak when it first launched. Instead, it will use the new Dell Stage Interface, which is close to the standard Google UI with a set of widgets developed by Dell added on top. This should make it easier for Dell to release operating system upgrades in the future. 

Because the Dell Streak is making the jump from Android OS 1.6 to OS 2.2, this new version will include a large number of significant enhancements:

• Adobe Flash 10.1 support
• Enhanced Microsoft Exchange support
• Ability to create a portable Wi-Fi hotspot
• Support for Live Wallpapers
• Improved performance & memory management
• Support for more apps like the native Twitter client, Skype for Android, and the Firefox Beta browser
• An improved, more-responsive, phone dialer interface
