Samsung Galaxy Player To Go Up Against the Apple iPod touch

Samsung is prepping an Android OS-based handheld computer focused on games, video, and music. The Samsung Galaxy Player will be almost identical to this company's smartphones, just without the phone part.

It is designed to go head-to-head with Apple's very successful iPod touch, a multimedia-oriented device that's essentially an iPhone without the phone. These products appeal to customers who want most of the advantages of a smartphone but without the monthly wireless service fee.

The upcoming Samsung device will include access to the Android Market which has around 200,000 games, utilities, and productivity apps.

When it debuts, this handheld is going to run Google's Android OS 2.2 on a 1 GHz processor.

It will have a tablet shape, with a 4-inch touchscreen with a WVGA (640 x 800) resolution. This will be an LCD, not the Super AM-OLED display in the smartphones of the Galaxy S series.

Although this Samsung device will lack cellular-wireless connectivity, users are going to be able to connect to the Internet over Wi-Fi (b/g/n), and Bluetooth 3.0 and a GPS receiver will also be included. 

The Galaxy Player is going to include a 3.2-megapixel rear-facing camera as well as a VGA front-facing one for video conferencing.

Different versions will offer 8 GB, 16 GB, and 32 GB of internal storage capacity, and a microSD memory card slot will be included on all.

Availability
Samsung is going to be showing off the Galaxy Player YP-GB1 at the Consumer Electronics Show next week, and it is set to debut in South Korea next month.

This Android OS handheld is scheduled to start appearing in other countries in April, and this will continue through June.
