Apple iPhone 3GS Price Drops 50%

When the iPhone 4 debuted last summer, iPhone 3GS was kept around to offer customers a low-cost option. This device is now even more affordable, as its price has been cut in half.

Previously, this Apple smartphone was $99 with a two-year contract, but the Apple Store is now offering it for $49. 

Last week, AT&T became the first to offer the iPhone 3GS at this new lower cost, but now that Apple's own store has joined in, it's clear that this is a permanent price change, not a temporary sale.

This model debuted in June of 2009. It sports an HVGA capacitive touchscreen in a slim tablet shape.

The iPhone 3GS runs iOS 4.2, the latest version of Apple's mobile operating system, on a 600 MHz processor.

The version of this smartphone selling now offers 8 GB of internal storage, plus it has a 3.0 megapixel rear-facing camera. It supports 3G cellular-wireless networks, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and GPS.

All iPhones have the ability to run native third-party applications that have been approved by Apple. In addition, they are able to connect to Microsoft Exchange for corporate email service.

In the U.S., iPhone 3GS is available only from AT&T.
