HTC 7 Pro Windows Phone Might Debut from Sprint in February

At CES last week, Sprint CEO Dan Hesse showed off his company's upcoming model running Windows Phone 7. Today, Sprint invited journalists to an event that could be the launch of this model, the HTC 7 Pro.

As it stands now, only GSM-based carriers -- including AT&T and T-Mobile -- can offer models running Microsoft's new mobile operating system. But Steve Ballmer said at the Consumer Electronics Show that the CDMA-based carriers, Sprint and Verizon, are going to introduce models in the first half of this year.

Sprint's Hesse went a bit beyond that, showing reporters at CES a device that he strongly implied would be available soon (see image at right).

He didn't reveal many details of this model, but it appears identical to the HTC 7 Pro, which unconfirmed reports over the last several months have indicated is headed to Sprint.

Coming Next Month?
Sprint has invited journalists to an event early next month that will be the announcement of "yet another industry first". This could be a reference to the official unveiling of the first Windows Phone 7 model from a CDMA carrier.

This event is being held in the evening of Feb. 7 in New York City.

An Overview of the HTC 7 Pro
HTC has already officially announced the 7 Pro, so its details are not a secret.

It is going to have a 3.6-inch, WVGA touchscreen that can slide aside (and tilt up) to reveal a landscape-oriented keyboard.

The HTC 7 Pro is going to run Windows Phone 7 on a 1 GHz processor and have 576 MB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage.

It will have 3G, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, and a GPS receiver.

Other features are going to include a 5 megapixel camera with LCD flash and a 1500 mAh battery.

There is no word yet on what Sprint will charge for its version of this smartphone.
