LG Ally Finally Receives Its Android OS 2.2 Upgrade

Users of the LG Ally have been waiting for quite a while for an Android OS 2.2 upgrade, but the wait is over.

This device launched last summer with Android OS 2.1, and this newer version of Google's operating system brings many enhancements to this mid-range smartphone, like enhanced performance and security.

According to the official changelog, LG VS740ZVD includes these changes:

• Improved security options include remote device wipe, device lock, password complexity, and a minimum password length.
• Long press of physical home key allows easy switching between, the last eight applications used.
• Bluetooth voice dialing displays your verbal instructions and repeats them back to ensure accuracy.
• Enhanced browser performance for faster loading of JavaScript pages.
• Enhanced screen rotation (270 degrees) for app compatibility (e.g. browser, messaging, maps and more).
• Updated contact directory, which combines corporate and Google accounts.
• Access the latest Amazon, Amazon MP3, Facebook,and Thinkfree Office applications.
• Instant data re-connection after a long voice call.
• LG Social Application (previously Socialite).

Other Changes from Android OS 2.2  (Froyo)
Android OS 2.2 runs applications faster than its predecessor thanks to its JIT compiler, and it includes the ability to store third-party software on a removable memory card.

Some smartphones with OS 2.2 can run Adobe Flash Player 10.1, which allows the device's web browser to fully make use of websites that use Flash for navigation, games, and showing video. However, it appears that the Ally is not in this group, likely because of its relatively slow 600 MHz processor.

This upgrade does not bring this LG smartphone up to the latest version of Google's operating system, as Android OS 2.3 debuted last month.

According to Verizon's support website, this new system software can be manually installed by going to Settings > About phone > System updates > Download.

Users also have the option to wait for Verizon to send the update to this smartphone automatically. Users will be notified when their device has received the new system software and given the option to install it.

Overview of the LG Ally
The smartphone is a slider, with a 3.2-inch WVGA (800 x 480) touchscreen and a landscape-oriented QWERTY keyboard.

Naturally, the LG Ally supports Verizon's voice and 3G (EV-DO Rev. A) data networks. In addition, the device includes Wi-Fi, stereo Bluetooth 2.1 and GPS.

It has a 3.2 megapixel camera with auto-focus and flash, 256 MB of RAM, and is bundled with a 4 GB microSD memory card.
