T-Mobile Planning the Return of the Sidekick

The Sidekick is one step closer to resurrection now that T-Mobile has confirmed that a 4G version of the discontinued T-Mobile phone is on its way. The next version of this once-popular consumer-oriented smartphone will run a new operating system.

Rumblings about the new generation Sidekick — the last model of which was discontinued back in the summer of 2010 — first started back in December when T-Mobile put up a teaser tweet saying, “What would you like to see happen with the Sidekick brand?”

Now, the Sidekick 4G has been confirmed by T-Mobile USA's CEO Philipp Humm, who said that it, along with a 4G version of the Samsung Galaxy S, would be "coming soon." 

No substantial details have been disclosed so far, but the 4G edition of the Sidekick will feature a QWERTY keyboard in addition to a touchscreen. A low-resolution image of it was shown off by Humm yesterday.

This company's CEO also said that the device is going to support T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network and run Google's Android OS. Previous versions ran an operating system created by Danger, Inc., a company that was acquired by Microsoft several years ago. Unconfirmed reports say it will ship with Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread).

Though the manufacturer of this device is still unknown, the Sidekick 4G will supposedly launch in the spring, so many are expecting an official announcement of the device in March at the CTIA tradeshow in Orlando.
