AT&T Letting Some iPhone Users Switch Back to its Unlimited Data Plan

It looks like AT&T is making one last stand to hold on to some of its iPhone users before losing them to Verizon.

Verizon is giving its customers a limited time offer when the iPhone 4 launches on its network, allowing users to purchase an unlimited data plan for $29.99 a month. In contrast, AT&T no longer offers unlimited data plans to its customers, only offering tiered data plans since June of last year.

But there may be hope. A loophole was discovered recently in which customers who had an unlimited data plan at some point in the past may revert, even if they are now on a tiered, limited data plan.

Re-grandfathering
Initially, when AT&T stopped offering its unlimited data plan last year, it allowed previously signed contracts to be "grandfathered" in, while disallowing any new, unlimited data contracts to be signed after the cut-off date.

Now, however, some customers are saying that even though they have since signed on to a limited data plan, when calling customer service they were told that they could -- or could not -- switch back depending on whether or not they had an unlimited data plan previously. One customer went so far as to claim that the reason customer service informed him of this unadvertised offer was because he threatened to go to Verizon.

If this is an attempt to prevent cross-over to its rival carrier, AT&T is trying its best to keep it from being widely known.
"We handle customers and their situations individually, and we’re not going to discuss specifics," said Mark Siegel, AT&T spokesman, when asked about the loophole.
