LG can officially stake its claim as the first company to offer a full 3D smartphone.
LG announced today that it will be unveiling the LG Optimus 3D, a smartphone that is going to feature a glasses-free 3D display and a 3D camera, at the Mobile World Congress this month. Previous speculations all pointed to this impending announcement, as LG's invite to its event at MWC featured an image of an Optimus phone with the title, "Into the New Dimension." (see here)
Though virtually no details have been confirmed about the specs of the Optimus 3D, previous rumors have indicated that it will feature a 4.3-inch display and will almost certainly run Google's Android OS, as all of the previous Optimus models have.
The most glaring challenge with releasing the first 3D smartphone, however, will be the lack of available 3D content, an issue that LG attempted to address in its press release for the Optimus 3D. The dual-lens camera for recording 3D content and connectivity options like an HDMI video-out port and DLNA will help create a "complete platform for a one-of-a-kind experience on a mobile device," said LG.
More details on this smartphone will be announced at the MWC tradeshow, which goes from Feb. 14 - 17.
