Mark Your Calendars: the Apple iPhone 5 Could Debut on...

The dates for Apple's next Worldwide Developer Conference may have leaked out. Steve Jobs has used this event in previous years to announce his company's new smartphones, raising the possibility that the the day the iPhone 5 will be unveiled is now known.

On June 7 of last year, the first day of Apple's WWDC, this company's CEO took to the stage of Moscone Center West in San Francisco to unveil the iPhone 4. 

Apple has not yet announced the dates for its 2011 developers conference, but the calendar for the Moscone Center shows that Apple has scheduled a ""corporate meeting" which is described as a "convention/tradeshow" on June 5 - 9.

Assuming this company follows its previous practices, Steve Jobs will be onstage in this venue to announce the iPhone 5 on June 5.

However, there is a complication: June 5 is a Sunday, and Apple has never announced one of its smartphones on a weekend.

Whether the official unveiling is June 5 or later, the release of the iPhone 5 probably won't happen on the same day. In 2010, Jobs unveiled the iPhone 4 on June 7, pre-sales started a week later, and the launch date was roughly a week later.

Naturally, with the launch of Apple's next smartphone still months away, there's no official information on what its specifications are going to be. Still, quite a bit of information has leaked out.

The iPhone 5 will reportedly run iOS 5 on a faster processor, possibly a multi-core chip. Its wireless networking may get a speed boost too, thanks to support for Verizon's and AT&T's 4G LTE network.

There may be some new features, like a video-out port and support for near-field communications. But some of this phone's features are likely to remain the same, such as its general design and screen resolution.
