Samsung Captivate Android OS 2.2 Upgrade Finally Released

The latest device to get a long-overdue upgrade to Android OS 2.2 (Froyo) is AT&T's Samsung Captivate.

This new version of Google's operating system, which was unveiled in June of last year, brings support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1 to this high-end smartphone, as well as other enhancements.

The Captivate debuted last summer with OS 2.1, and users of this smartphone have been waiting for an upgrade ever since.

New in Android OS 2.2 (Froyo)
Android OS 2.2 is required for devices to run Adobe Flash Player 10.1, which allows the web browser to fully make use of websites that use Flash for navigation, games, and showing video.

This version of Google's operating system also contains a number of other improvements, such as faster performance thanks to a new JIT compiler, the ability to store applications on a removable memory card, and new security features.

In addition, AT&T is adding support for USB tethering as well as a mobile hotspot app to the Captivate.

PC Required
Upgrading this smartphone to Froyo requires hooking it to a PC. More information on this process is available on Samsung's website.

Android OS upgrades are typically sent over-the-air, but that apparently won't be an option in this case.

Only Verizon Is Left
The Captivate is a member of the Samsung Galaxy S series. Models from this series were released by all of the top U.S. carriers.

In the last few weeks, Android OS 2.2 upgrades have been released for T-Mobile's Samsung Vibrant and Sprint's Samsung Epic 4G. This leaves only Verizon's Samsung Fascinate running the previous version.
