Research in Motion (RIM) is reportedly going to release a version of BlackBerry Messenger for rival operating systems.
If this unconfirmed report is true, this will be a significant change in strategy, as BBM has long been one of the top reasons why people buy a BlackBerry.
Citing unnamed sources, BGR says that an Android OS version of this instant messaging app could be available later this year, while one for Apple's iOS is under discussion.
Not the Same BBM Experience
While some might be wondering why RIM is apparently willing to cede one of its best features to its rivals, there's a bit more to the story.
The company is considering charging Android OS and iOS users for this app, and a subscription fee is another possibility.
In addition, competing operating systems might also be getting a bare-bones version that will allow users to chat, but not exchange pictures or other files.
