The Nokia E7 launched in other parts of the world last month, and now those in the U.S. can put in a pre-order for this high-end smartphone running Symbian^3.
This is Nokia's new flagship device for business users, and it sports a large display and keyboard.
No U.S. carrier chose to offer the E7, so it is being sold directly to the public. It is "unlocked" so it will work with any cellular-network that uses the GSM standard, such as AT&T and T-Mobile.
Because there is no carrier subsidy, this smartphone sells for $680.
The E7 was originally scheduled to launch last year, but last-minute problems pushed the release back several months. Nokia now says the U.S. debut will happen at some point in April.
Nokia E7 Overview
This smartphone features a slide-and-tilt display and a large sliding keyboard. The 4-inch, AMOLED display has a 640 x 360 pixel resolution.
The E7 runs the latest version of the Symbian OS, and comes with a range of business-oriented software, allowing users to work on Microsoft Office files via the Quickoffice app. It also supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync.
This phone is able to connect to the 3G bands used in the United States (AT&T and T-Mobile) as well as the ones used in the rest of the world. It also includes Wi-Fi b/g/n and Bluetooth 3.0.
The E7 includes an 8 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, as well as a front-facing VGA camera for video conferencing.
Other features include a USB-to-go port, an HDMI video-out port, and a 1200 mAh battery.
Last of Its Kind
Anyone considering purchasing the Nokia E7 should keep in mind that it's going to be one of the last Symbian^3-based smartphones from this company -- if not the last.
A deal was announced last month that will result in Nokia using Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 on all future high-end smartphones. The company is going to release devices it already had in the pipeline -- like the E7 -- but it has stopped developing more.
This year's Mobile World Congress tradeshow in February was the first at which Nokia unveiled no new models. Instead, it showed off some concept devices running Windows Phone 7.
