Like many other things these days, it all starts with an app. The Peel app for iPhone takes user input about what TV shows they like and watch, and develops recommendations based on this information. But that's only the beginning.
The app orders this information, and all of the TV selections that a user likes or might like, and presents times and channels in a simple, visual user interface.
It gets really interesting, however, when the hardware comes into play. Recommendations and channel guides are great, but the free Peel application just compiles this information. The hardware -- a pear-shaped transmitter that connects an iPhone to a television, cable or satellite box, Blu-ray player, AV receiver, Apple TV or Roku -- allows users to integrate the information compiled by the app into their entertainment experience.
Users can change channels, control their DVR, and use their iPhone to perform all of the basic functions of many/all of their remotes.
Price and Availability
The Peel app is free to download in the App Store, while the transmitter costs $100, and is available in the Apple Store.
The app and device work with the second-generation iPhone and later, as well as both versions of the iPad.
Also, be forewarned that the Peel device requires a Wi-Fi connection, C batteries, and will require one to two months to ship.
