Apple iPhone 5 Leaked Renderings Show a Larger Screen

Rumors about the upcoming iPhone 5 have been coming fast and quick, many of which indicate that this model will have a larger display than its predecessors. A set of CAD drawings supposedly showing this re-designed smartphone has leaked out of Asia.

These are allegedly intended to give accessory makers the information they need to produce cases for this upcoming device. A similar set of CAD drawings that emerged last year correctly revealed the design of the iPad 2.

If these renderings are real and not a hoax, the iPhone 5 will have the same general size and shape as its predecessor, but with a larger display and a smaller bezel.

Exactly how much larger the screen will be is not clear. The current iPhone 4 has a 3.5-inch display, but earlier published reports indicate that the next-generation model could have one as large as 4 inches.

The 960 x 640 resolution is not expected to change, but a larger screen would help this device compete against Android OS-based smartphones that have displays as large as 4.3-inches. 

These CAD drawings directly contradict a recent report that Apple is giving up the iPhone 4's wrap-around antenna in favor of a more rounded design for it next phone.

Apple isn't expected to officially announce its next-generation smartphone until early summer, but that hasn't slowed a recent rush of rumors and other unconfirmed reports. These focus on more than just this upcoming model's screen size.

Most sources agree that this model is going to run iOS 5 on the Apple A5 1 GHz dual-core processor, which is debuting today in the iPad 2.

Apple executives have obliquely referred to a new entry-level model, but what its features will be is not yet known.
