Sprint and Sierra Wireless have just announced the second generation of the Overdrive mobile hotspot series: the Overdrive Pro, which will feature several major upgrades.
Up to eight devices will be able to connect to this accessory, three more than with the previous model.
The Overdrive Pro supports a large assortment of devices, from notebooks to smartphones on competing networks to eReaders. Any number of devices are compatible, as long as they have Wi-Fi capabilities and are in range -- within 150 feet.
When a 4G network is available, the Overdrive Pro will connect devices to Sprint's WiMAX network at speeds of 3-6 Mbps. When outside of the 4G coverage range, the device will also be able to connect to Sprint’s significantly less speedy (ranging from .6 kbps -1.4 Mbps) 3G network.
The Overdrive Pro will retail for $50 after a $50 mail-in rebate. Users must have a Sprint 3G/4G Mobile Broadband Plan, which start at $50 per month for unlimited 4G use and 5 GB of 3G. This price is for subscribers who also have voice plans with Sprint. For those who have a different carrier for voice, this package will cost $60 per month.
Sprint will begin selling the Overdrive Pro on March 20.
