Qik, the formerly independent popular video chat software producer that was recently purchased by teleconferencing-chat powerhouse Skype, has just launched the Qik Video Connect app for the iPhone.
The app comes in a free and paid 'plus' version, both of which contain some novel features to go along with standard video chatting capabilities.
Aside from making live video calls, the free version of Qik Video Connect allows users to record and send video mail to friends who aren't available for live chat.
The software also provides two neat social networking tools. The first is the ability to post links of live video streams, letting users give friends and family access via Twitter or Facebook to live casts as the user records (Qik defines it with the portmanteau "friendcasting").
The second is the social video feed, which contains videos recorded by contacts in an easy to navigate interface, and alerts users when new videos are posted.
Additionally, Qik Video Connect will automatically integrate with a user's existing contact list, instantly determining which of a user's friends have Qik Video Connect and are available to chat or ready to receive video messages.
The $2.99 Qik Video Connect Plus contains all of the features of the free version, with the added benefits of real-time effects, a basic video editor to crop videos at appropriate points, and HD recording.
Both Qik Video Connect and Qik Video Connect Plus are currently available in the iTunes App Store.
