Samsung Nexus S 4G Debut on Sprint Moving Closer

Sprint has promised to release its own 4G version of the Samsung Nexus S, but hasn't said when this is going to happen yet. There's new evidence that this debut is coming soon, though.

An internal document leaking out of Sprint indicates that employee training on this Android OS smartphone is set to begin on Monday, April 25. If this is true, then the release of the Nexus S 4G will likely be a couple of weeks later.

This unconfirmed report isn't really necessary to be fairly sure that Sprint is going to introduce this device before the start of June. When it announced plans to offer its own version of this smartphone, the carrier said it would be on the market this spring.

The Nexus S debuted late last year from T-Mobile, and Sprint will be the second U.S. carrier to offer it. The "Nexus" name indicates that this model is the one Google recommends developers use.

It has a bar shape with a 4-inch, WVGA (800 x 480), Super AM-OLED touchscreen. In an unusual touch, this display curves to fit against the user's face.

The Nexus S runs Android OS 2.3 (Gingerbread) on a 1GHz Samsung processor, making it one of the few running the latest version of Google's operating system. It has 512MB of RAM, 16GB of internal storage, and a microSD memory card slot.

This Samsung model uses a "pure" version of the operating system, without a customized user interface overlay. Naturally, it comes with the standard suite of Android OS software for communication, entertainment, and productivity.

Sprint's version will support the carrier's 4G WiMAX network, plus it will offer Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1, NFC, and A-GPS. T-Mobile's version supports this carrier's own 4G network.

The Nexus S also has a front-facing video camera for video conferencing, as well as a 5 megapixel rear-facing camera.

Sprint is going to charge $200 for this smartphone when it's purchased with a two-year service contract. That's the same price as T-Mobile.
